Mineral Psilomelane has no fixed formula but sometimes it is defined as Ba(Mn+2)(Mn+4)8O16(OH)4 or Barium Manganese Oxide Hydroxide. Psilomelane actually belongs to the Oxides and Hydroxides mineral class. It is most commonly used as an ore of manganese. Mineral Psilomelane is also most commonly used as mineral specimen and it can be seen showing splendid microscope images when viewed under polarizing microscopes used in optical mineralogy. Though Psilomelane is a mineral name that is losing its significance, the name is still used around the world referring to the hydrated manganese specimens that usually show interesting images under polarizing microscopes. Although Psilomelane is not common, it is considered as an important ore of manganese. Manganese is a strategically valuable metal since it is an essential ingredient in steel and other alloys. It has been known in mineralogy that the mining term wad is used to indicate ores that are a mixture of several manganese oxides such as Psilomelane.


            Mineral Psilomelane is most often found banded with gray Pyrolusite and this specimen sample is most often found showing fascinating images under polarized microscope used in optical mineralogy. Psilomelane is usually found showing variable colors from iron-black to bluish black to steel gray, which can be more splendidly exhibited when samples are evaluated with the aid of polarizing microscope for mineralogists. The alternating layers makes an attractive polished stone with bands of metallic gray and submetallic black that is more clearly exhibited when specimen samples of mineral Psilomelane is closely examined under petrographic polarizing microscope used in optical mineralogy. Mineral Psilomelane is most commonly found showing submetallic to dull luster in earthy specimens, all of which can be seen more clearly visible when specimen is viewed clearly under polarized microscopes for mineralogists. Psilomelane is also most commonly found forming tufts of hair-like aggregates that are similar to those produced by mineral Pyrolusite. The two are also easily distinguished from one another through their difference in luster when viewed in reflected light of polarized microscope.


            Most crystals of mineral Psilomelane are found opaque in appearance. The crystal habit of mineral Psilomelane as described in the field of optical mineralogy usually includes massive, fibrous, botryoidal, columnar, stalactitic, concretionary, powdery and earthy. Psilomelane is known to crystallize in the monoclinic system of crystal formation. In optical mineralogy, the monoclinic system of crystal formation comprises crystals having three axes of unequal lengths. Two of which are usually found in a position that is oblique or not perpendicular to one another. However, both of which are commonly found perpendicular to the third axis. Mineral Psilomelane has absent cleavage even when specimen is evaluated more closely with the aid of petrographic polarizing microscope for mineralogists. Psilomelane is also most commonly found showing conchoidal to uneven fracture when sample is evaluated under polarized microscope used in the field of optical mineralogy. The hardness measure of the mineral when specimen is evaluated using the Mohs scale method is usually ranging from 5 to 5.5. The specific gravity measure of the mineral is usually found ranging from 4.4 grams per cubic centimeters to 4.5 grams per cubic centimeters, which is considered heavy for non-metallic minerals. Psilomelane is also most commonly found leaving a black to brownish black streak when specimen sample is rubbed on a white porcelain streak plate. Psilomelane is usually found associated with other interesting minerals including barite, hematite, quartz, Pyrolusite and other manganese oxide minerals. The best field indicators of mineral Psilomelane include streak, luster, habits, color and hardness. Psilomelane notably occurs at several localities including Germany, England, Brazil, some areas in USA and elsewhere.
