Petrographic polarizing microscopes must be kept as clean and dust free as possible. These polarizing microscopes should be picked up by the base and by the arm only. They should never be picked up by microscope tubes, stage or substage. More importantly, the lenses must never be touched. When cleaning the lenses, great care should be taken. This so because optical glasses are generally softer than the common glass and they can be easily scratched. Compressed air or a camel hair brush should be used to remove dust. A lens tissue or other soft cloth intended for cleaning optical equipment should used to remove oil, fingerprints, and other soil. Before cleaning the lens with the lens tissue, make sure that all dust and grit are removed in order to avoid rubbing the dirt around on the lens. Only breathe on the lens or just simply dampen the lens tissue with distilled water if a little liquid is needed. Never use solvents like acetone or alcohol unless approved by the manufacturer. This is because solvents may dissolve the cement that holds the lenses together.

Lenses and other parts of the microscope should be disassembled very carefully and only by qualified technicians.
