The chemical composition of mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is indicated by the formula Ba(Y,Ce)6Si3B6O24F2. Cappelenite-(Y) is usually found occuring in small vein in nepheline synite pegmatite. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is usually found at its type of locality at Lille-Aro in the Langesundfiord, southern Norway. This mineral Cappelenite-(Y) was named for D. Cappelen of Holden, Norway, a collector who discovered the mineral, and its “yttrium” content. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) has no cleavage display even when evaluated closely with the aid of petrographic polarizing microscopes used in the field of optical mineralogy. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is usually found greenish brown in hand sample. The density measure of mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is usually found 4.4 grams per cubic centimeters. Most crystals of mineral Cappelenite-(Y) are found subtransparent to opaque in appearance. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is found showing brittle to conchoidal fracture. This is a very brittle fracture producing small, conchoidal fragments which are made more clearly visible when viewed closely under polarizing microscopes used in the field of optical mineralogy. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is usually found forming prismatic crystals shaped like slender prisms just like that of tourmaline. The hardness measure of mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is usually found 6 when evaluated using the Mohs scale method. Most crystals of mineral Cappelenite-(Y) are found showing vitreous or glassy luster when evaluated in reflected light of petrographic polarizing microscopes. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is also commonly found showing uniaxial figure when evaluated between crossed nicols of polarizing microscopes used in the field of optical mineralogy. Mineral Cappelenite-(Y) is found to have weak radioactivity.
