The chemical formula of mineral Atheneite is indicated by (Pd,Hg)3As. Atheneite is usually found in concentrates from gold washings. Atheneite was named after the Greek goddess “Pallas Athene,” in allusion to its palladium content. Mineral Atheneite is known to crystallize in the hexagonal system of crystal formation. In optical mineralogy, the hexagonal system of crystallization comprises crystals having four axes. Three of which are positioned in a single plane with equal length and are symmetrically spaced. The fourth axis is found to be perpendicular to the other three axes. Atheneite is most commonly found colored gray white in hand sample. The specific gravity measure of mineral Atheneite is usually found 10.2 grams per cubic centimeters. Most crystals of mineral Atheneite are usually found opaque in appearance. The hardness measure of mineral Atheneite when it is evaluated using the Mohs scale method is usually found 5. Mineral Atheneite is also commonly found showing metallic luster when viewed in reflected light of polarizing microscope used in the field of optical mineralogy. Mineral Atheneite is actually a non-radioactive mineral.
