The chemical formula of mineral Armalcolite is indicated by (Mg,Fe++)Ti2O5. This mineral can be found at Ti oxides associated with deep-seated intrusives. This is usually found at its type of locality at the Tranquillity Base, Moon. Smoky Butte, Garfield Co., MT. Armalcolitewas named after the three astronauts of Apollo 11: Neil A. ARMstrong, Edwin E. “Buzz” ALdrin, and Michael COLlins. Mineral Armalcolite is known to crystallize in the orthorhombic system of crystal formation. In optical mineralogy, this orthorhombic crystal system comprises crystals having three mutually perpendicular axes, of which all are of different lengths.

            Armalcolite is most commonly found colored gray in hand sample. The specific gravity measure of the mineral is usually found 4 grams per cubic centimeters. Most crystals of mineral Armalcolite are found opaque in appearance. The crystal habit of the mineral as ddescribed in the field of optical mineralogy usually includes granular form that generally occurs as anhedral to subhedral crystals in matrix. The hardness measure of the mineral when it is evaluated using the Mohs scale method is usually found 6. Armalcolite is most commonly found showing metallic luster when viewed in reflected light of polarized microscopes for mineralogists. It is most commonly found showing biaxial figure when evaluated between crossed nicols of polarizing microscope used in the field of optical mineralogy. Armalcolite also shows strong anisotrophism exhibiting pale gray to dark bluish gray colors. The intereference color exhibited by mineral Armalcolite is usually from gray to tan. Pleochroism is also observed at some time. Armalcolite is a non-radioactive mineral as evaluated.
